The Cross Keys pub in Washington

The Cross Keys pub, also known as The Cross Keys Hotel, is a traditional English pub located in the town of Washington. Washington is a small market town with a rich history and it was once a thriving industrial center. The Cross Keys hotel has been serving locals and visitors alike for over 300 years, making it one of the oldest pubs in the area!

The first record of this historic pub dates back to 1698 when it was owned by William Lawrence who leased it from Lord Carlisle for £50 per year. After purchasing this lease from Lord Carlisle’s son, he had to pay an annual rent to use the land—a common practice at the time among landlords throughout England.
